Time is winding down. I leave on Monday morning.
I sent a big box home by China Post. Cost was 570 RMB, or about 70 dollars. All my books and school supplies, and most of my summer clothes. The box will arrive in tow months - or the end of March. I will not need anything in the box until well after then.
Don and I went DVD hunting again. The 60 I bought on Wednesday was not enough. Good thing too. I bought 20 more. Found a few that were missing on Wednesday, and Don talked me into buying two Clint Eastwood directed movies about Iwo Jima. Claims they are good, and not Pro USA.
Came home and finished packing most things.
At 5 Pm I had diner with the Dean of Overseas College, Mr. Lee, Mr. Chan, Huangmin and Maggie at the Jimei University Hotel. The dinner was great, and I was introduced to Chinese liquor ... and shots. They gave me a going away present. A beautiful silk tie, and a new Chinese invention, the ONE GIG LASER PEN. It is a pen. On the other end is a laser pointed. Unscrew the cap, and it is a 1 GIG flash drive. Very useful.
After Dinner, Aaron and Demi arrived. They say I will be invited to their wedding. They brought me a gorgeous hand carved stamp set. Must see it to believe it.
The last thing was Don coming over to watch a movie. "The Bucket List" staring Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman and directed by Rob Reiner. Think it has to be a good movie? You would be right. Many great lines but the best Jack Line is "Here's something to remember when you're older Thomas - never pass up a bathroom, never waste a hard-on, and never trust a fart". A line worth remembering as I age.

WELL ... WELL ... WELL ... Humber sent me an email today. Seems they do not have a replacement and want to talk to me on Monday morning at 6:30, One and one half hours before I leave for the airport. I am firm in a what I want, and now I want more. I have no clothes, no school supplies, I already gave away my printer and toaster ... and I want them to pay to replace them
Linda arrived at 7. We went to Xiamen Grand Hotel for dinner. A great buffet. For only 125 RMB (15 dollars Canadian) , it rivals any I have seen in Canada, maybe better. The “Pièce de résistance” is the Chocolate Fountain. They have a grill and BBQ pit with beef, pork, fish and seafood, Sushi bar, Fresh pasta bar, desert table, ice cream bar, salad bar, carving table, soup station, cheese and cold cut counter, and a set of 10 to 12 chaffing dishes.
After Dinner Linda had to pick up her broken computer, and I went home to wit for her. She finally showed at midnight. We talked a little, then flipped a coin for the sofa. She won the sofa, which is a good thing because I am too tall for it.
Monday January 28
Up for my 6:30 phone call. What a crock of ****. All Humber said was that the offer they made me was a fair one. I told them it was not. I told them why. I told them we had an agreement on November 2. They have reneged. The fact the associate chair made a wrong offer does not mean they try to blame me for being greedy. It means you be an responsible adult and start with an apology! Instead they say I did not understand them. Academics, where integrity is all we have to separate us from them, the administration are a bunch of liars.
I told them I wanted the original offer, PLUS all the extra expenses I would now have because they have been dragging their ***es!
The cold reality is they are in this for profit. They see the Chinese students as a way to make money. Academics do not mean much to them. This makes them even dumber in my mind. There are two ways to increase profits Since profits are revenues minus expenses, you can increase revenues, or cut costs. They seem to want to control costs. I want to increase revenue.
Get more students up to standards, and more of them gong to Canada. Have more graduate, and spread the world about how good the program is. Now you have increased demand for the program, can even raise tuition to cover additional costs. HOW DO YOU DO THIS!! Hire good professors, treat them fairly, and pay them a proper wage to teach properly and promote the program in China.
Humber’s solution is to low ball the professors, under pay them, or hire poor quality professors. In the long run, this hurts the program. Fewer students come to Canada. Even less of them will be successful. The ones who pay a ton of money to go into the program are not happy. Demand goes down. Program viability suffers. In the short run, they make more money this way. In the long run they lose.
The difference in costs between what I wanted and what they offered is either 3 or 5 thousand, plus my new expenses. Very little, but I was not going to drop one cent after the B. S. they fed me for two months.
In the end, they lost someone with a MBA and Masters in Education. I was teaching extra classes in English for free. I had built a good reputation with the Jimei people, and had convinced a number of students who were not going to go to Canada to now consider going.
The people Humber has to choose from are UNEMPLOYED. Second term started three weeks ago. These are people who did not get a teaching job!!! Great Choice Humber.
Monday January 28 Part II
After my great phone call with Humber, Linda and I finished packing. Roger and Don came over. We chatted, they took the things they wanted from my place.
We said our goodbyes. Don and Roger each took a suitcase. I took the three carry ons, and Linda smiled and walked along. We met the driver out front, loaded the car, and off to the airport.
At the airport, David and his girlfriend showed up. I said some goodbyes, and headed through security. I hope I see them again.
Good bye Jimei
